Development

Our work is based on the study of how cognitive abilities develop over time. Cognitive Scientists have mapped the development of cognitive abilities from birth to adulthood. Knowledge of these hierarchies of abilities enables us to determine students’ strengths and weaknesses.

Some curricula assume that children arrive in kindergarten or first grade having sufficiently developed their cognitive abilities. However there is tremendous variability in the rate at which individual children develop cognitive abilities. While one 6 year old child may be ready for the academic work of first grade, another 6 year old may not. Too often students are expected to perform in academic settings despite lacking crucial cognitive abilities.
